Problem-Help?

by Rachel on August 17, 2009

So there is a little boy that lives down the street. He is about 5 or 6.

He likes to ride his bike up and down the street, over and over and over. This is fine, there aren’t many cars that come down this way, and I am in no way against kids riding their bikes. (I wish he would wear a helmet, but I am not his mother.)

My problem is that this little boy likes to ride his bike up the driveway. I think he does it for attention, because he only seems to do it when someone is outside. Like today, for example: I came home, stopped the car at the end of the driveway, got the mail-he starts riding up the street. Then I continue up the driveway, park, and fiddle with stuff in the car for a few minutes before getting out, all the while he keeps riding up into the driveway.  I get out of the car-he keeps riding up the driveway. I go inside- he rides away.

He really seems to want attention. Whenever I walk my dog he seems to always be outside, not talking to ME, but he might say something to my dog. Mostly he just seems to hover.

The riding-up-in-the-drive scares me though.  I am afraid that he might take to hiding behind the cars or following the car up the driveway or something like that. I don’t have kids, so I am not in the habit of looking out for them in my own driveway.  I often start up the drive and then turn around if I realize I forgot something, so I don’t think my fears are unfounded.

I need advice though-I don’t know whether I should ask the little boy (nicely) to not ride in my driveway or talk to his parents. I don’t know his parents at all, other than exchanging friendly waves if  they drive by and I am outside or something.

What would you do?
