Knit, Knit, Knit

by Rachel on December 14, 2009

I’m working on some knitting tonight.  The crafty bug has bit me hard over the last couple of weeks, and I’ve been sooo impatient for a night like tonight where I can just sit down and get to it.

Unfortunately, the hat I was working on had to bite the dust….after a week of working on it (extremely sporadically) , the yarn just kept winding too tight. Plus, I think it would have been too small for the person I was making it for anyway. (I made MJ try on what I had worked on and it fit around her neck…which is an average medium-sized dog neck…much smaller than a person’s head.)

I think I’m having a hard time with the hat for two reasons:

1. I’ve made scarves before, but no hats. I used the long rectangular “knifty knitter” to make the scarves…so this is my first experience with the round ones.

2. I have a really big head. No, I don’t have an ego problem, I mean that my head is HUGE.  Little tiny ordinary people hats do not fit my head. They make dents in my forehead.  (I need extra room for mah super-sized brains….uh, no ego problem here, moving right along.)  In all seriousness though, it is not my imagination…my head really is bigger than other peoples’ heads. Ex No. 1: I made “Native American Indian Hats” for the adults to wear at the Kindergarten Thanksgiving party….I sized them all to my head…. they were too big for all the other parents/adults.  *Sniff!*  I’m ok though. My big head has taken me far in life.

Er, wasn’t this post about knitting?

Anyway,  my point was that I am having a hard time using the round knitting looms.  I have a teeny tiny baby one that is blue, a kid size? one that is red, a bigger one that is green, and a GIGANTOR sized one that is purple. I may have a giant head, but srsly, this thing is like big enough to go around my waist…no one’s head is that big.

I started on the kid? size red one, but I think that one was just too small..I’m going to try again on the green one, so I hope that that is the right size.

If anyone has any tips/ideas/epiphanies  on how I can get the yarn to quit being so tight and/or what size I should use (it is for someone with a normal sized adult head), please, please PLEASE, let me know!
