Ice Skating

by Rachel on January 10, 2010

Tonight, D and I went ice skating.  I haven’t been ice skating since I was about 13….I haven’t gotten any better at it since then either.

I should make it clear that even under the best of conditions (smooth walking surface, adequate lighting, proper shoes), I am not terribly coordinated.  I trip over my own feet at least once a week.  For further evidence of my klutziness, feel free to read here and here.  For someone who does those sort of things, attempting to glide on ice while balanced on two small blades is maybe not the best idea.

So, we go to the rink, I put on the skates, and immediately there is a problem…I can’t even walk in the damned things on the floor, much less move on the ice with them.  We go through a few minutes of me falling down every other minute, when D realizes that I haven’t properly laced my skates…whoops.  Apparently they are supposed to be so tight that they cut off all circulation to your feet, but at least I could stand up after they were re-laced.

We venture back out onto the ice. I was clinging to D for dear life.  I don’t think his hands will ever be the same. Even with holding on to someone who can actually skate, I still managed to fall fairly often.  This might have posed a problem if I were some delicate fragile little thing, but it’s practically like I was MADE for falling down….let’s just say that I have plenty of junk in the trunk….so falling down on a little ice didn’t do much damage.  So, we skated. Well, D skated, and I held on and attempted to stay upright.  I  finally managed to make one lap around the rink without falling. Victory!  Then I parked myself on a bench and watched D skate a few laps.  He is a really good skater, which is something that I did not know about him. He can even skate backwards! I was totally out of my element, but I am glad he had a good time.  I want to thank him for being such a good sport and hauling 160 lbs of girlfriend around the rink all night.

Even though I am a really crap skater, I had a good time.
